The Government of the Republic of Serbia endorsed last year the National Strategy of Waste Management with the attached EU advancement program (NSWM). As a long term plan, the subject program correctly addresses the ways of approaching the European Union, by presenting general principles of waste management; however the same cannot be inferred in regard to the National Strategy of Waste Management, which is intended as a fundamental document providing conditions for rational and sustainable waste management in the Republic of Serbia. For the purpose of developing this document into true National Strategy of Waste Management, which would establish the basis for implementation of the EU advancement program, it has to be supplemented and supported with a number of implementation schemes dealing with collection, transportation, treatment and controlled disposal of waste. Specifically for this reason, the present paper outlines the concept of NSWM and assesses some open issues of municipal waste treatment that form part of the NSWM.
