Driving energy consumption is one of the basic and biggest issues related to train traction costs. Without the accurate determination possibility of consumed driving energy we can not expect the progress of the traction unit organization in the sense of operation profitability increasing, better use and bigger productivity of tractive units. For the purpose of determination of the railway tractive units energy consumption, operation and technical measures for saving energy are given,as well as possibilities for energy consumption optimization. Majority of these measures is possible to take also at the Serbian Railways.
