The paper deals with the trends in development of industry of high-performance machines for transshipment of containers and reload of bulk materials. The paper gives theses on manufacturing process and key items for purchasing quay cranes including criteria for evaluation of proposed solutions. Modern principles and some problems in design of quay cranes are shown. The goals in design are analyzed, as well as main items and new requirements that must be met for a good design of crane. The paper also considers the possibility of Serbian manufacturer (GOŠA- Smederevska Palanka) to design and manufacture large quay cranes, and the approach for development of the new product is proposed.
